A Town Built on Community: Why We Chose to Call Esk Home
Finding peace and strong neighborly bonds in Somerset. Exploring why this quiet town is the ultimate safe haven and how you can afford to stay.

There is a certain magic to finding a place where you truly belong. For many of us, that place is Esk, nestled beautifully in the Somerset Region of Queensland. It is a town that feels like a well-kept secret, a peaceful sanctuary away from the relentless rush of the bigger cities. When we chose to call Esk home, we were looking for a quieter life. What we found was a community that enriched every aspect of our daily routine.
One of the most remarkable things about Esk is what it intentionally leaves out. There are no pokies anywhere in town. It is a conscious choice by our local publicans to keep that cancer of society out of reach. This simple decision improves every part of our town. You do not see older people wasting their hard-earned retirement savings on machines. Instead, that money stays within the local economy, supporting small businesses and fostering a healthier, more vibrant community.
The Peace of a Quiet Street
The tranquility here is absolute. After 7pm, when our local IGA shuts its doors, the main street goes delightfully dead. There are no vagabonds hanging around. All you hear are the crickets. Driving through town at night feels incredibly safe, a stark contrast to the heightened alertness required in many Brisbane suburbs. We are in a little bubble, surrounded by abundant wildlife rather than endless fields of suburban roofs.
This safety extends to the way people interact. In Esk, most people you walk past will attempt to make eye contact. They greet you with a friendly hello or a respectful nod. It is the complete opposite of the norms in bigger cities, where people push through their day with their heads looking down, their ears filled with podcasts, entirely ignoring the humanity around them. Here, those friendly smiles from strangers are likely just locals wondering who you are because they haven't met you yet.
A Thriving Local Spirit & Heritage
Esk is not just a place of quiet streets; it is a town with a proud history. Founded as a staging post, our heritage is still visible in the beautiful timber buildings and the old railway station that now serves as a community hub. We are caretakers of this history, and there is a shared understanding that we are preserving something deeply special for the generations that follow us.
You can tell a lot about a town's future by its school. Our local school has beautiful grass fields and is thriving. In a town of 1300 people, roughly 10 percent of our population attend the local school, with about 130 children enrolled. It shows we have a vibrant future being home-grown right here.
We also enjoy the convenience of modern living without the suburban squeeze. We have both Coles and Woolworths delivery, and we are only an hour commute from Brisbane. Yet, most home blocks here are large enough to run a flock of chickens without ever disturbing the neighbors.
The Best Food in Somerset
We are incredibly fortunate to have a rich culinary scene for a town our size, with a range of cafes that all serve awesome food. The local roaster is obviously the go-to for its exceptional coffee, Nash is the absolute standout for its breakfasts, and the local bakery serves the best pies in the Somerset (sorry, Fernvale!).
Beyond our incredible cafes, we are supported by amazing small producers. Fresh macadamias, avocados, quality beef, and much, much more are all grown just a few rock tosses distance from the CBD. The connection to the land and the food we eat is palpable here.
Adventures on Our Doorstep

When we are not enjoying the local cafes, there is an abundance of adventure right on our doorstep. The Somerset region is perfectly nestled between the lakes, making it an ideal spot to kayak on Lake Wivenhoe or catch a breathtaking sunset over Lake Somerset. For those who prefer solid ground, the famous Brisbane Valley Rail Trail brings visitors who appreciate our history and offers miles of cycling and walking tracks right through our town. A short scenic drive takes you up the winding roads to Mount Glorious for panoramic views, or out to the pristine rainforests of Crows Nest and Ravensbourne National Parks.
A Place to Rest and Recharge
And after a long day of exploring, there is nothing quite like returning to the Esk Grand Hotel. From the street you don't even know it is there; just push on through the front door and head in, because it is absolutely huge out the back. Their famously spicy parmies are the perfect end to any adventure, and the amazingly friendly staff serve up genuine country hospitality every single time.

When visitors come to experience our slice of paradise, there are plenty of wonderful places to rest their heads. For those who enjoy a vibrant community atmosphere, the Esk Caravan Park is a local favorite. It boasts fantastic amenities including an outdoor swimming pool, communal barbecues, and even pizza ovens for a perfect evening feast.

Alternatively, if you prefer waking up right by the water, the holiday parks near Lake Somerset offer sprawling grounds for camping and direct access to water sports. Whether you are pitching a tent or staying in a modern cabin, the local accommodation options reflect the same welcoming spirit you will find walking down our main street.
Community When It Counts
Perhaps the greatest testament to Esk is how the town responds to adversity. When disaster strikes or threatens to strike, you can turn to your neighbors for immediate assistance. Everyone helps each other out. It is a town built on mutual respect and genuine care. Whether it is a fallen tree across a driveway or a fence needing repair after a storm, there is always someone ready to lend a hand or drop off a hot meal.
I love this town. I love the people that live here, and I love being able to raise a family here. It is the sort of place where roots grow deep and leaving feels impossible.
However, as we transition into retirement, the cost of living and property maintenance can sometimes cast a shadow over this rural dream. Many locals find themselves asset-rich with beautiful acreage properties, but lacking the daily liquid capital to comfortably enjoy the town they love. We recently spoke with a local couple who had spent thirty years cultivating their gardens just outside the main street. When property rates and maintenance costs began to outpace their pension, the thought of selling and moving away from this incredible community was heartbreaking. They were facing the very real possibility of leaving their friends, their routine, and their sanctuary.
Fortunately, securing your "forever home" shouldn't be derailed by financial worries later in life. Just like the local couple who chose to stay, an Occupancy Contract Till Death can help unlock the value of your property, providing the financial security to confidently remain in the community you love. Knowing you can release capital through a safe, legally binding agreement ensures you never have to leave your beloved Esk behind. If you are weighing these options and want to stay rooted in Somerset, a quiet chat with a Rural Retirement Trust specialist can help clarify your path forward.
